Britta Reitan

Deputy Commissioner

Britta Reitan serves as deputy commissioner for enterprise finance and agency operations at Minnesota Management and Budget. In this role, Britta oversees key financial functions, including the state’s financial management systems and services that support state operations in the areas of accounting, payroll, financial reporting, debt management, and internal controls. In 2023, under Britta’s leadership, MMB secured funding to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and security of the essential technology systems supporting Minnesota government operations. Britta plays a crucial role in leading teams that provide administrative, fiscal, human resource, strategic planning, and legislative support services to MMB’s 365+ employees.

Prior to her appointment as deputy commissioner, Britta was assistant commissioner and state budget director, first under Governor Mark Dayton and continuing under Governor Tim Walz. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Britta led the allocation process of the $2.187 billion in federal funding the state received to respond to the public health emergency. She was instrumental in maximizing federal funding opportunities which yielded more than $300 million in state COVID appropriations being returned to the general fund. Britta also shepherded the development and passage of Governor Walz’s 2021 “response and recovery” budget.

Britta started with MMB in 2006 as an executive budget officer working in the E-12 education budget. She stepped into a leadership role in the budget division in 2010, supervising a team of budget officers that cover pensions, taxes, public safety, education and judiciary budgets. During her tenure, the Minnesota legislature passed landmark pension reforms to ensure Minnesota’s public employee pension plans remained solvent. In 2018, Britta was honored among that year’s Top Women in Finance by Finance & Commerce. This award recognizes women for their professional accomplishments, their leadership in the community, and their commitment to their profession.

Britta holds a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota, Humphrey School of Public Policy; and a Bachelors in Political Science from St. Olaf College.
