Leading Through Administrative Transition
In November 2026, Minnesotans will elect a new governor, and a new administration will begin in January 2027. This change in executive leadership means transition and change for us in state service: a new governor and team, likely new leaders in cabinet agencies, and at least some changes in priorities and approaches.

Fiscal Management
As managers and leaders in state government, we are stewards of the state’s financial resources. Monitoring our budgets and understanding the broader context are important parts of our stewardship role.

Managing Organizational Change
In state government, we don’t always have a choice when it comes to change. Often, we just do our best to deal with what comes our way. Reacting to events as they appear can be a serviceable strategy, but leading change can be more impactful (and invigorating!)

Strategic planning is a time to take stock of your current situation, clarify your purpose, set a vision for the future, and identify a clear path to get there.

Setting Vision
Many organizations set a vision as a bold statement of hopes and aspirations. A vision lets people know what the organization hopes to achieve through their work, and it helps the organization set priorities and guide action.

Problem Solving
Avoidance, cryptic language, or indecision will never solve a problem. Many of us are hesitant to be decisive out of fear we will make the wrong decision, or that we will hurt our working relationships. Ignoring problems, poor communication, and wasting time are all much more harmful than making a tough call.
