Developing Self

“The swiftest way to triple your success is to double your investment in personal development.” – Robin Sharma.

As leaders and public servants, we must be dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and personal development to adapt to the needs of our teams and our state.

Developing yourself means avoiding complacency by actively seeking out opportunities for self-improvement. You discover these opportunities by asking yourself questions such as:

  • What skills do I have, and which skills do I need to improve?
  • What goals should I set for myself so that I can measure my success?
  • Can I handle criticism well?
  • Can I ask for help when I need it?
  • Can I apologize when I make a mistake?
  • When was the last time I tried something new?
  • What have previous supervisors said about my performance, and would they still say that today?
  • Who do I rely on for advice or to help me get work done?
  • Do I have good relationships with the people I work with?
  • Where do I get the most satisfaction at work?

While expectations for Minnesota leaders are high, they aren’t unachievable  – especially when you ask for help. Whether it’s an unfamiliar process, new software, or part of your interpersonal development, there are resources available to you. Take advantage of training and skills development courses and seek advice from every level of your team to find opportunities to learn something new. Openness to learning is the first step in developing self.

By reading this on the Leadership Learning Hub, you’re already developing your professional self. Congratulations! You’re doing great!
