Statement from MMB Commissioner Frans on the US Supreme Court’s Ruling in Janus v. AFSCME
ST. PAUL, MN – Today, Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans issued the following statement regarding the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME.
“The Supreme Court’s decision today in the case of Janus v. AFSCME was surprising in its determination that fair share union fees paid by public employees who are not members of their bargaining units violates the U.S. Constitution. Currently, employees who elect not to join the union that represents them pay a fair share fee instead of union dues, as they are still represented by the union in collective bargaining and grievances.
My staff and I work closely with the unions that represent state of Minnesota employees, and I know how hard they work on behalf of all the employees they represent. My staff is currently reviewing today’s ruling. Once that review is complete, we will take any necessary steps to ensure Minnesota is in full compliance with the law.”
