Short- and Long-term Disability
What if you couldn't work because of an illness or injury? Disability insurance can help pay your everyday bills.
Disability insurance provides additional income if a covered illness, injury, surgery, pregnancy or medical condition keeps you from working. For example, you may need time off after surgery, an injury or giving birth.
During Open Enrollment for 2027 you may:
- Sign up for short-term disability coverage. Proof of good health is not required.
- Drop your current short-term coverage.
- Sign up for long-term disability coverage. Proof of good health is not required.
- Drop your current long-term disability coverage.

Long-term
Long-term disability insurance helps if your doctor certifies that you cannot return to work.

- The premium you pay is based on the amount you choose.
- Other income you receive reduces your payment from long-term disability insurance. For example, you receive less LTD if you also get sick leave, vacation leave, Minnesota Paid Leave, Social Security disability benefits or a pension.
