Life and AD&D
Life Insurance
You can sign up for or change Life insurance benefits during Open Enrollment. Go to Self Service to add or change coverage. You may:
- Enroll in coverage or increase coverage without proof you are in good health. Limits apply.
- Drop coverage or remove children who are over age 26
Options include:
- Employee Additional Life
- Spouse Life
- Child Life
If you want to increase the value of your insurance by more than the amounts below, you must provide evidence that you (or the person you are insuring) are in good health. It's called evidence of insurability.
Review the details about each type of coverage on SEGIP's website.
If you and your spouse (or another eligible family member) both work for an organization with SEGIP coverage, you cannot insure each other as a dependent under Life Insurance or AD&D (Accidental Death & Dismemberment) insurance. Each person who is independently eligible for benefits must generally have their own Life and AD&D coverage rather than being listed as the other person’s dependent.
Only one employee can cover a child or other dependent. They cannot have child life coverage by two employees in SEGIP.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance AD&D insurance covers accidents only. It pays a benefit if you die because of an accident or suffer certain serious accidental injuries, such as loss of a limb or other covered dismemberment. This is different from regular Life Insurance, which pays a death benefit according to its policy terms and isn't limited to accidental death.
You can enroll at any time. You may also cover a spouse. No medical exam or proof of good health is required to get this coverage.
