ST. PAUL – According to data released by Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB), over 105,000 Minnesotans benefited from the state’s Premium Assistance Program between the months of January and April.
The Premium Assistance program provides eligible policy holders with a 25 percent discount on their insurance premiums throughout 2017. The program is open to Minnesotans who are enrolled in the individual insurance market, who fulfilled their monthly premium payment, are not participants of any Minnesota public health care programs, and do not receive federal subsidies through an advance premium tax credit on their monthly bill.
Premium Assistance is made possible by a $312 million dollar investment by Governor Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature. Insurance companies provide eligible Minnesotans the discount on their monthly statement. Each insurance company then seeks reimbursement from the state. Initial invoices for the first months of 2017 were submitted by insurance companies to the state in June and are currently under review by MMB. Once the invoices are verified by MMB, the insurance companies will be reimbursed. Insurance companies have sought reimbursement for approximately $46,967,290 for the months of January through April.
