The Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) Survey conducted by the BLS shows that in March the number of job openings rose to 183,000 over the month in Minnesota on a seasonally adjusted basis. Compared to one year ago, job openings were up 13.7%. This compares to a decline nationally of 11% over the year.
The number of hires rose 6.5% over the year in March in Minnesota and fell 1.2% nationally. Total separations decreased by 10.8% over the year in Minnesota and decreased by 1.6% nationally.
Minnesota's job openings rate bumped up over the month to 5.7%. Nationally the rate dropped to 4.3% (see figure below). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percent of total employment plus job openings.
In Minnesota there were 0.5 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in March – or five unemployed works for every 10 job openings – level with the previous month. This indicates that Minnesota continues to have a tight labor market where there are fewer than one unemployed worker for every job opening. Nationwide the ratio bumped up to 1 to 1.
