The Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) Survey conducted by the BLS shows that in July the number of job openings rose to 167,000 over the month in Minnesota on a seasonally adjusted basis. Compared to one year ago, job openings were down 2.9%. This compares to a decline of 3.9% over the year nationally.
The number of hires fell 13.7% over the year in July in Minnesota and 3.9% nationally. Total separations increased by 13.3% over the year in Minnesota and decreased by 3.9% nationally.
Minnesota’s job openings rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 5.2% in July over the month. Nationally, the rate dropped one-tenths of a point to 4.3% (see figure below). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percent of total employment plus job openings.
In Minnesota there were 0.7 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in July – or seven unemployed works for every 10 job openings – up one-tenth of a point from June. This indicates that Minnesota continues to have a tight labor market where there are fewer than one unemployed worker for every job opening. Nationwide the ratio remained level at 1.0, with an equal number of job seekers and job openings.
