The Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) Survey conducted by the BLS shows that in June the number of job openings dropped to 157,000 over the month in Minnesota on a seasonally adjusted basis. Compared to one year ago, job openings were down 13.7%. This compares to a decline of 0.7% over the year nationally.

The number of hires fell 10.3% over the year in June in Minnesota and rose 3.5% nationally. Total separations increased by 8.8% over the year in Minnesota and 5.5% nationally.

Minnesota’s job openings rate fell to 4.9% in June, down from 5.6% in May. Nationally, the rate dropped two-tenths of a point to 4.4% (see figure below). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percent of total employment plus job openings.

In Minnesota there were 0.7 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in June – or seven unemployed workers for every 10 job openings – up one-tenth of a point from May. This indicates that Minnesota continues to have a tight labor market where there are fewer than one unemployed worker for every job opening. Nationwide the ratio ticked up to 1.0, with an equal number of job seekers and job openings.
