The Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) Survey conducted by the BLS shows that in April the number of job openings fell to 179,000 over the month in Minnesota on a seasonally adjusted basis. Compared to one year ago, job openings were up 18.5%. This compares to a decline nationally of 2.9% over the year.
The number of hires rose 5.3% over the year in April in Minnesota and rose 0.6% nationally. Total separations were flat over the year in Minnesota and decreased by 1.4% nationally.
Minnesota’s job openings rate fell over the month to 5.5%. Nationally, the rate ticked up to 4.4% (see figure below). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percent of total employment plus job openings.
In Minnesota there were 0.6 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in April – or six unemployed workers for every 10 job openings – slightly up from the previous month. This indicates that Minnesota continues to have a tight labor market where there is fewer than one unemployed worker for every job opening. Nationwide the ratio remained level at 1 to 1.
