The Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) Survey conducted by the BLS shows that in February the number of job openings fell slightly to 179,000 over the month in Minnesota on a seasonally adjusted basis. Compared to one year ago, job openings were up 17.8%. This compares to a decline nationally of 11.4% over the year.

The number of hires fell 6.9% over the year in February in Minnesota and 5.2% nationally. Total separations decreased by 5.1% over the year in Minnesota and decreased by 2.9% nationally.

Minnesota’s job openings rate remained level over the month at 5.6%. Nationally the rate dropped to 4.5% (see figure below). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percent of total employment plus job openings.

In Minnesota there were 0.5 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in February – or five unemployed works for every 10 job openings – level with the previous month. This indicates that Minnesota continues to have a tight labor market where there are fewer than one unemployed worker for every job opening. Nationwide the ratio remained at 0.9 in February.
