Careers: Entry level positive support positions are a natural step for DSPs
Positive support services is a type of disability service offered in Minnesota. Positive support services consist of developing, implementing and monitoring a person-centered, individually designed, proactive plan to address challenging behaviors.
A waiver positive support professional develops this plan to enhance a person’s quality of life through the process of teaching or increasing positive behavior. When possible, the person leads the process to develop a positive behavior support plan and/or positive support transition plan.
The service employs three staff levels: professional, analyst and specialist. The entry level, waiver positive support specialist, is a natural progression from other types of direct support professional positions.
Direct support professionals who have or would like to develop skills in understanding the function of behavior, data collection and person-centered practices are encouraged to consider working under this service.
