This information describes eligibility requirements for Medical Assistance (MA) and MinnesotaCare. It does not cover all program rules. This information is for people who:

  • Are age 21 through 64
    • Are not pregnant
    • Do not have children under age 19 living with them
    • Do not receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
    • Do not qualify for Medicare

How much does coverage cost?

Depending on which program you qualify for, you may have to pay a monthly premium and copays. The amount, if any, depends on:

  • Your income
  • If you live with your spouse
  • If both you and your spouse qualify.

When can my coverage start?

Depending on which program you qualify for, your coverage may start:

  • The first day of the month that we get your application
  • Going back up to three months before the month we get your application
  • The month after you are approved and pay your first premium, if you have one

What is the income limit?

The income limit depends on your family size and the health care program you qualify for.

What is the asset limit?

There is no asset limit. Assets are items like cars, checking and savings accounts, your home and financial investments.

Can I qualify if I have other health insurance?

You may still qualify. You must tell us if you have other health insurance or could get coverage through an employer or military service. Sometimes we can pay the cost of the other insurance so you can keep that coverage.

What if I do not qualify and still need coverage?

You may qualify for an advanced premium tax credit through Minnesota's health insurance marketplace, MNsure. The tax credit helps pay part or all of your health care premium. Even if you do not qualify for the tax credit, you can compare options and buy affordable insurance. You cannot be denied coverage if you have a pre-existing condition.
