Risky Business | Guard Against Clothes Dryer Fires

Guard Against Clothes Dryer Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), clogged dryer vents contribute to over 15,000 fires annually. The leading cause is failure to clean out dust, fiber and lint. Lint is extremely flammable and, over time, builds up in dryer ducts. This accumulation causes excessive heat buildup, which can lead to a fire.

Reduce your risk of dryer fires by following these simple tips:

  • Clean the lint filter before each cycle.
  • Have the interior venting system serviced and cleaned annually.
  • Clean the vent duct – the greater the length of the duct, the more frequent the cleanings.
  • Inspect the dryer ducts to make sure they aren't damaged or pinched and the ductwork is secured using metal tape, not screws or non-metal tape.
  • Make sure the outdoor vent covering opens when the dryer is operating, and that the vent isn't clogged or blocked by plants and snow.
  • Replace coil-wire foil or plastic venting with a rigid, non-ribbed metal duct.
  • Have gas-powered dryers professionally inspected annually to ensure the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
  • Never leave a clothes dryer running when you leave the building.

Even in the absence of fire, clogged vents cause dryers to be less effective resulting in greater use of electricity and more breakdowns. If you find your dryer is taking longer and long to fully dry a load of laundry, chances are your vent has become blocked with lint.
