Assistive Technology Reutilization (Reuse)

What is AT reuse?

Reuse occurs when assistive technology (AT) that is no longer needed is passed along to someone else either by selling, exchanging, or donating the device. Reuse also occurs when a device is repaired and cleaned (refurbished) before being sold or donated.

Eventually a device will reach the point when it no longer functions properly or does not meet current standards and technological demands. Once a device is no longer useful, it should be recycled.

If you are interested in buying, selling, or donating used assistive technology, please visit STAR's Device Exchange page.

Reuse Resources

The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs facilitates the coordination of state and territory AT Act programs nationally and provides technical assistance and support to its members. There are also programs that help consumers and families reuse assistive technology devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, computers, or other equipment for daily living. Disability Resources has a directory of affordable used Assistive Technology programs nationally, and ConnectAbility of MN has a donated equipment program that operates across the state of Minnesota.
