Accommodation Fund

The State of Minnesota's Accommodation Fund was established to reimburse money spent by state agencies to make reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities. The goal of the fund is twofold:

  1. To provide an equal footing for applicants with disabilities during the hiring process, in support of Governor Walz's Executive Order 19-14; and
  2. To provide for a more inclusive workplace environment for current employees with disabilities.

The Minnesota Department of Administration (Admin) is authorized to provide reimbursements for three different types of reasonable accommodations. These include:

  1. Expenses for applicants for employment in any amount;
  2. Expenses for current employees for services that are provided on a periodic or ongoing basis; and
  3. One-time expenses for current employees that total more than $500 for a single employee in a fiscal year.

All spending after June 30, 2015 is eligible for reimbursement.

Please Note: Due to the end of the current biennium, the Accommodation Fund has added a submission date.

What is a Reasonable Accommodation?

A reasonable accommodation is defined as step(s) which must be taken to accommodate the known physical or mental limitations of a qualified disabled person (Minnesota Statutes 363A.08 Subd. 6). Some examples of reasonable accommodations include:

  • restructuring a job;
  • modifying a work schedule;
  • acquiring or modifying work equipment; and
  • providing aides.
