State Capitol

Hours of Operation:

The Capitol building is open to the public -

Monday through Friday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Sunday: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM 

Tour an architectural masterpiece by influential architect Cass Gilbert. From its grand stairs to its historic legislative chambers to the public works of art surrounding the building, there's always something to see at the State Capitol. Take a free guided tour to see the restoration effort up close or take your own self-guided tour.

How to Get Here

  • There are three (3) Light Rail stations located in the Capitol Complex including the Rice Street Station, just west of the State Capitol Building. Click here for stop locations.
  • There are many parking facilities on the complex that include pay stations for visitor parking. Click here for more information. 
  • Long term parking contracts are also available. Click here for more information.

Access Information

The loading dock for the Capitol Building is at the Minnesota Senate Building, 95 University Ave. W., St. Paul, MN 55155.  Loading dock is on the north side of building on Sherburne Avenue. Loading dock can accommodate straight trucks only; no semi-tractor trailers

The next building survey will take place December 2017.

Conference Rooms

State Capitol conference rooms are scheduled through Capitol Complex Reservations.  All rooms in the State Capitol building, except for G20A, are subject to bumping during the legislative session. 

Public Use of the State Capitol Building and Grounds

The building and grounds are available for use by the public to hold various gatherings, speeches, ceremonies, meetings and other related uses. The event applicant must agree to and accept responsibility for managing the requirements and Rules of Conduct for Users of Public Space in State Buildings and on Capitol Complex by their event vendors, attendees, and volunteers. Cafeteria

The Rathskeller cafeteria's food service is now closed, but the seating area is available to be reserved. See our Public Events page for more information and resources. Catering service is available from Taher Capitol Complex Dining Services at 651-224-3004.  Other locations for cafeterias are the Transportation Building and Centennial Office Building
