Law Enforcement Overview
Under the Data Practices Act, law enforcement data are data created, collected, or maintained by entities which carry on a law enforcement function, including municipal police, county sheriffs, fire departments, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Department of Public Safety (Minnesota Statutes, section 13.82).
However, inactive body camera and drone data that were not criminal investigative data are not covered by section 13.82. For more information on these types of data, see our pages on body camera data and drone data.
Data collected by other agencies that merely work with law enforcement, such as prosecutors or probation authorities, are not classified as law enforcement data under the Act and are not covered by section 13.82. Other sections in the Act may apply and classify these data.
