State of Minnesota Celebrates National Preservation Month and Introduces a New Statewide Historic Preservation Plan

5/13/2022 9:31:34 AM

SAINT PAUL – Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed May as Historic Preservation Month in Minnesota, recognizing the state's rich and diverse history that extends at least 13,000 years. This year's nationwide Preservation Month theme announced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is "People Saving Places." Historic preservationists dedicate their time, energy, and resources into protecting historic places they care about, often without recognition. Preservation Month 2022 serves to recognize these professionals — a national celebration of everyone doing the important work of saving places and inspiring others to do the same.

Over the last three years, the people of Minnesota including, partners and various stakeholders, have contributed to the creation of a new Statewide Historic Preservation Plan. The Minnesota Statewide Historic Preservation Plan 2022-2032 shares a vision for how Minnesotans can continue to work together to preserve and protect the full array of historic resources. Along with this vision, the Plan provides goals and strategies for the management of historic and cultural resources that can be used throughout the state to respond to trends and overcome challenges facing Minnesota's historic resources. The Plan was approved by the National Park Service in January 2022.

This month, spend some time at a historic place, attend a tour, take a class, and visit the Minnesota Statewide Historic Preservation Plan 2022-2032 web page at https://mn.gov/admin/shpo/planning/statewide-plan-new/ for more information about the Plan and its purpose.
