Admin awards Small Theater Grant to historic Canby Theater

1/6/2016 10:14:43 AM

West Central Minnesota theater will install video, audio, and accessibility upgrades with Arts and Cultural Heritage funds

SAINT PAUL - Movie buffs in West Central Minnesota will continue to have access to films and other entertainment through state grant funding recently awarded to the historic movie theater in the city of Canby. The Minnesota Department of Administration (Admin) last month awarded the Canby Theater a $23,000 Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund Small Theater Grant.

The Canby Theater will use the grant to replace the 35 millimeter video projection system currently in use by one of its two screens. In addition, the theater will install accessibility upgrades that ensure people with hearing disabilities can enjoy the shows. The theater recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and has been undergoing a number of renovations in recent years with support from state grants, local funding, and community donations.

"These grants are to preserve Minnesota's cultural heritage, which the historic Canby Theater has been doing through film and entertainment for generations," said Commissioner Matt Massman.

Admin's Office of Grants Management is responsible for a portfolio of Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grants providing funding for small theaters, public and community radio stations, parks, and many other community resources around the state. The office also provides leadership, resources, and training on grant-making practices within state government and strives to connect the public with information about state grant opportunities.

The Legislature established the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grants with funds collected as a result of Minnesotans passing the Clean Water and Legacy Amendment in 2008. The Small Theater Grants strive to ensure continued access to films in communities across Minnesota by providing money for historic, small town theaters to purchase and install digital projection technology. Priority is given to communities with few available theaters, theaters with only one screen, and theaters operating exclusively with 35 millimeter projection systems.

More information about these Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grants is available on Admin's website. More information about the Clean Water and Legacy Amendment and other Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund projects can be found at www.legacy.leg.mn.
