SAINT PAUL - Minnesotans interested helping persons with disabilities acquire the devices they need to live, learn, work, and play are encouraged to apply for the Minnesota Assistive Technology Advisory Council. The council advises the state on how to carry out its responsibilities under the federal Assistive Technology Act. The council is currently seeking three members.
The council encourages applicants who reflect Minnesota's diverse population, including those of various racial and ethnic backgrounds, from differing regions of the state, and with a wide range of disabilities. The council consists of six public members and five state agency representatives, for a total of 11 members. Public members of the council must:
The council meets twice a year, in January and July. Members receive reimbursement for travel expenses.
The Secretary of State's Office is accepting applications until Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Interested citizens can apply in three ways.
The Minnesota Assistive Technology Advisory Council was established under the federal Assistive Technology Act of 1998. The Department of Administration is charged under Minnesota law as the lead agency for assisting the council in carrying out its responsibilities (Minnesota Statutes 16B.055, subd. 1). Assistive technology (AT) is any device that maintains, improves, or increases function of an individual with a disability at home, work and school, and in the community. AT can be anything from a pencil grip to a sophisticated device that generates speech. For more information about AT in Minnesota, visit the STAR Program website at mn.gov/star.
