Insuring Drones

In the excitement of acquiring unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) for your agency, insurance may be the furthest thing from your mind.

As the world with drones continues to evolve and new and exciting uses for drones are contemplated, so too evolves the potential liabilities! The need for insurance coverage becomes increasingly more important!

What This Means to You

Your drones are uninsured unless they have been reported to the Risk Management Division!

The cost to insure smaller drones for liability is approximately $1,000 per year. Physical damage insurance is also available, and the cost is dependent on the value of the drone.

Next Steps

If you are with MnSCU, continue to report your drone fleet changes to Keswic Joiner, Director Risk Management for MnSCU, using the Drone Reporting Form(Excel).

All other agencies should complete the Drone Reporting Form (Excel) and send it to Carol.Morgan@state.mn.us. Use the same form to report any changes to your drone fleet.
