City of Saint Paul’s Race to Reduce competition monitored energy consumption in participating commercial and public buildings during the summer of 2018

Saint Paul — The State of Minnesota was recognized today as a leading organization in Energize Saint Paul’s Race to Reduce, a City of Saint Paul initiative highlighting the benefits of energy efficiency and benchmarking energy information in commercial and public buildings.
Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter established Energize Saint Paul to provide resources for property owners and residents to increase their energy efficiency. To measure efficiency, the program created a comprehensive benchmarking initiative that combines utility meter consumption data and building characteristics into a single energy monitoring system for participating buildings. This information helps building owners and occupants review building performance by comparing similar buildings locally and nationally and identifying opportunities to conserve energy and save money.
The State of Minnesota was among the first participants, enrolling each of the fifty Saint Paul buildings owned or leased by the State in the energy benchmarking initiative. The State will use the collected data to further potential energy savings and quickly prioritize energy actions.
“Better data and active collaboration among state and local governments is critical to addressing climate change,” said Minnesota Department of Administration Commissioner Matt Massman. “The power of partnerships such as Energize Saint Paul and Minnesota’s Office of Enterprise Sustainability are essential tools addressing climate change and operating efficiently.”
Larry Herke, Director of the Office of Enterprise Sustainability at the Department of Administration, was a contributing member of the Saint Paul Building Energy Advisory Committee.
“We are always looking for success stories from other organizations that can be replicated in State Government,” said Herke. “Benchmarking our data helps us compare our performance as well identify problem areas.”
