State Demographic Center Highlights Important Migration Trends

Annual report titled "Minnesota On The Move" focuses on the implications of migration

ST. PAUL - The Minnesota State Demographic Center (SDC) released its latest annual report today, titled "Minnesota On The Move: Migration Patterns and Implications." The report examines statewide migration patterns and emphasizes the important role they will play in Minnesota's future, as the impacts of an aging population draw ever closer.

"The migration of people to Minnesota will become increasingly important in the coming years," said Susan Brower, State Demographer for Minnesota. "As our state ages, migration will become a central factor driving both population and economic growth in Minnesota. It will be critical that our leaders understand those patterns when preparing for the future."

The SDC report contains an analysis of Minnesota's migration patterns from 1991 to 2014. Detailed data within shows the impacts of domestic migration versus international migration, compares Minnesota's migration outcomes to other states in the region, and analyzes the factors that influence the movement of people in and out of the state. Overall, this information reveals opportunities for focused efforts to attract, integrate, and retain new residents to the state. One such opportunity area lies with the state's young adult population, between 18 and 24 years of age.

"Sound demographic analysis is an important aid to effective planning and leadership," said Matt Massman, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Administration, state agency home to SDC. "The work of Brower and her team offers vital insight about the challenges and changes Minnesota will face in the future. I encourage leaders to use it in their efforts to build a better Minnesota."

"The challenge of making migration a positive force for Minnesota begins now," explained Brower. "Retaining our existing residents and attracting new ones will not only shore up our labor force in the years to come, but will also fuel our economy and uphold high quality of life in Minnesota."
