SAINT PAUL - Commissioner of Administration Matt Massman will tour Camp Ripley on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 9:30 to 11 am to observe the many improvements the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) made to its facilities, including its efforts to host solar energy generation systems.
"I am excited to see the great work being done by the Department of Military Affairs to use clean energy, reduce the cost of government, and advance self-sufficiency of state run facilities. The improvements at Camp Ripley provide an excellent opportunity to learn how the benefits might be expanded to other facilities better provide services for the people of Minnesota while saving taxpayers money and resulting in a better environment," Commissioner Massman said.
In cooperation with other state agencies including DMA, in October the Department of Administration issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) inviting businesses to bid on a solar garden contract for up to 11.4 megawatts of electricity to power state buildings and operations.
"Solar is an exciting and important energy alternative, and this RFP will allow the state to be a leader in advancing solar in Minnesota," Commissioner Massman said.
The DMA received the 2014 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award for Environmental Quality to advance their commitment to Net Zero. Net Zero efforts reduce energy consumption by changing behaviors and adding efficiency upgrades in new construction and existing facilities. DMA partnered with Duluth-based Minnesota Power to construct a 10-megawatt solar array on Camp Ripley, installing geothermal and energy reducing technologies in buildings, and implementing water reuse and solid waste reduction measures.
Governor Dayton committed state agencies to reducing their carbon footprint in /admin/assets/11-13%20(2)_tcm36-281934.pdfExecutive Order 11-13 by making their buildings and activities more sustainable and using clean energy resources. Since that time, the Capitol Complex has reduced its energy consumption by more than 20 percent. To complement these energy reduction efforts, the state is striving to increase its use of renewable fuels.
