How strong is your slip and fall prevention program?

Twisted ankles, concussions, and broken bones are just some of the injuries that people can experience after slipping and falling. Add Minnesota winters into the mix and you have another challenging level of risk for employees, guests, and patrons.

That’s why it’s important to implement both indoor and outdoor safety programs to eliminate or reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents.

Follow these tips to avoid and prevent slip and fall accidents:

First assess your slip/fall hazards
  • Conduct a detailed inspection of parking lots and walkways
  • Ask staff who maintained these areas id they have noticed specific hazards
  • Provide outside maintenance and inside housekeeping staff with appropriate equipment, materials, and training.
Control Hazards by eliminating or reducing risk
  • Set high standards for housekeeping and maintenance, including inspection of lighting and visibility.
  • Make sure steps, ramps, parking lots, walkways, entrances, and exits stay clear of mud, snow, and ice.
  • Keep all drains clear of obstructions so water can drain quickly.
  • Use salt, sand, or other anti-slip materials to keep parking lots and walkways clear.
  • Continually monitor weather reports for warnings of slippery or hazardous conditions.
  • Encourage everyone to protect themselves by wearing appropriate footwear.
