Risky Business | Frozen Pipes

Property and Casualty Insurance and Loss Control Information for you from Administration's Risk Management Division

Polar Vortex = Frozen Pipes!

With temperatures forecasted at least -20˚ this weekend, now is the time to take action to prevent pipes from freezing in your buildings. For those of you that have new construction or renovations underway, this is especially important to address.

AIG’s 2 page Insight document titled “Frozen Pipes” does a nice job of summarizing actions you can take to reduce your risk.

Two key actions you should take now:

  • 1. Inspect exterior doors and windows to be sure they are closed and functioning properly so cold air is not leaking into the building.
  • 2. Frequently inspect areas prone to frozen pipes (especially over weekends and holidays).

It is also a good idea to have a plan of action if a pipe bursts!
