Best to Leave Fireworks to the Experts!

That's what the National Safety Council advises!

Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. Yet, the thrill of fireworks can also bring pain. 230 people on average go to the emergency room every day with firework-related injuries in the month around the July 4 holiday (source, Consumer Products Safety Commission website)

The National Fire Protection Association reports that from 2009-2013, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 18,500 fires caused by fireworks. These fires included 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and 16,900 outside and other fires.

The National Safety Council advises everyone to stay away from all consumer fireworks and to only enjoy fireworks at a public display conducted by seasoned professionals. Just because various forms of fireworks are legal doesn't mean they're safe.

The following websites provide firework safety information:

If you do choose to use fireworks, please follow these safety tips!

  • Never give fireworks to children
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix
  • Wear safety glasses, gloves, pants while shooting fireworks
  • Light one firework at a time
  • Do not hold a fireworks item in your hand
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles
  • Always have a water source nearby

Please share this information with staff so that everyone can have a safe and happy Independence Day!
