Work in Hot Environments

What a difference a few weeks make! We had a snowstorm on April 13th and 100 degrees six weeks later! The National Weather Service is indicating the high temperatures from this weekend are continuing and is forecasting a heat index in the 90's for a large portion of Minnesota. Heat indices in the 90's are considered moderate risk conditions for heat-related disorders.

If you have employees working in hot environments (outdoors or in areas without air conditioning) you should have plans in place that prevent heat-related disorders. Plans include:

  • Encouraging employees to remain well hydrated
  • Making sure additional rest breaks in cool areas are available
  • Employees should also be trained in recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat-related disorders for themselves or co-workers
  • Dress appropriately for outdoor work

Several great resources include:

Federal OSHA

Minnesota OSHA

NIOSH
