Thousands of Minnesotans will be traveling long distances, firing up the barbecues, and enjoying time on the water over the long Memorial Weekend. But before you start grilling up hotdogs or head out on that trip, make sure to take these safety tips into account to get the most out of your holiday.

Driving: More Traffic = More Crashes

  • Check your oil, check your tire pressure, and fill up the tank before driving long distance.
  • Leave earlier than you normally would, slow down, and drive defensively.
  • Check the weather before you leave and know the potential hazards.

Outdoor Grilling: A clean grill is a happy grill

  • Check propane grills for leaks. If you’re using charcoal, take it easy on the lighter fluid!
  • Keep small children and pets away.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Be ready to put out a fire. Do you have a fire extinguisher?

Water Safety: Be Prepared

  • Make sure everyone uses their life jacket.
  • Keep a close eye on children in the water.
  • Check the weather and water conditions beforehand.
  • Don't forget sunscreen!

Fireworks: Never Experiment

  • A responsible and sober adult should supervise all firework activities.
  • Wear safety glasses
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area and have a water source nearby.

Remember the meaning of Memorial Day

We all look forward to the extra time off from work to safely celebrate with loved ones, but please take a moment or two this weekend to remember those who served and sacrificed their lives to protect us. Go out of your way to thank a veteran or active service member for their sacrifice and show support by waving the American flag!
