Did You Know?
- Smoke alarms expire after 10 years
- In 2014, fire departments responded to 367,500 home fires. These fires caused 2,745 deaths, 11,825 injuries, and $6.8 billion in damage.
According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), many people do not know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced.
October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week!
This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign is Don't Wait -- Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years which focuses on these key messages:
- Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years
- Make sure you know how old all smoke alarms are in your home
- To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
What You Need To Do
- Check the date of manufacture on your smoke alarms and replace them if older than 10 years
- Change the batteries. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.
- Send this message to everyone you know!
