Minnesota Archaeology Week is September 12 to 20

9/11/2015 10:14:43 AM

Discover Minnesota's archaeology and cultural heritage through fun, hands-on events happening across Minnesota

SAINT PAUL - Next week Minnesotans will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at recently discovered stone drawings, take part in a 19th Century trading festival alongside hundreds of reenactors, and learn about people of the 1700s and 1800s through music. These are just a few of many events happening statewide from Sept. 12 to Sept. 20, 2015 as part of Minnesota Archaeology Week.

Archaeology Week kicks-off with the 12th Annual Minnesota Archaeology Fair at Fort Snelling State Park. The fair takes place on Sunday, Sept. 13 and features hands-on activities and demonstrations that put archaeology into action. Attendees can take part in pottery-making, learn to toss atlatls (spear-throwers), and bring artifacts they've found to be identified by archaeologists. The fair is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to attend - though a Minnesota State Park permit is required to enter the state park.

A comprehensive list of events and additional information is available at mn.gov/admin/osa. Like the Archaeology Fair, all Archaeology Week events are open to the public and are free of charge, but in some cases there are associated site admission fees.

Minnesota Archaeology Week has been held annually since 1995 with the goal of promoting interest in archaeology and an appreciation of the state's diverse cultural heritage. The Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) is the main sponsor of Archaeology Week, coordinating the Elden Johnson Distinguished Lecture-named for Minnesota's first state archaeologist-as well as assisting with coordination of numerous other events.

Additional sponsorship support comes from the Minnesota Historical Society, the Minnesota Archaeological Society, the Council for Minnesota Archaeology, the State Historic Preservation Office, and a number of local state parks, museums, historical societies, colleges, and others.

OSA's mission is to promote archaeological research, share archaeological knowledge, and protect archaeological resources for the benefit of all the people of Minnesota. OSA is a division of the Minnesota Department of Administration.
