ST. PAUL - The charioteer figure who guides the golden horses on the Minnesota State Capitol Building's Quadriga statue will be temporarily removed on Tuesday, September 23. The charioteer figure is being removed to repair corrosion discovered at the statue's base. The repair is expected to take approximately three months. The charioteer will return to the Quadriga at the conclusion of the repairs and when weather permits.
The corrosion is primarily located on the top surface of the chariot where the charioteer figure stands. This corrosion will be repaired and the charioteer figure will be regilded and inspected for any other needed repairs. The figure will be removed and lowered to the ground using a crane. More details about the timing of the removal are listed below.
The Quadriga was sculpted by Daniel Chester French and Edward Potter and first placed on the State Capitol in 1906. More information about the Quadriga can be found on the Minnesota Historical Society website at sites.mnhs.org/historic-sites/minnesota-state-capitol/quadriga.
