Securing Data Integrity and Operational Continuity Through Record System Modernization

Minnesotans benefit when state agencies manage data securely, efficiently, and in full compliance with the law. That’s why the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) is analyzing data remaining in the outdated Informix operating system and migrating records to a modern, future-ready platform. With support from the Technology Modernization Fund, this project protects critical business data, strengthens data governance, and ensures long-term compliance with state and legal standards.

To reduce risk and improve accuracy, DLI is reviewing decades of records not migrated to current business applications to organize them by division and match them with current rules for what to keep and what to delete. This ensures important records are saved, outdated data is securely removed, and DLI can manage information more efficiently and responsibly—delivering stronger data practices that support better service for all Minnesotans.

In addition to cleaning and classifying existing records, the project will identify modern storage applications capable of supporting retained digital records and newly scanned paper documents. The team will collaborate with business units to document technical and operational requirements and evaluate potential platforms. These solutions will be designed to automate future data purging, reducing manual workload while maintaining compliance and auditability.

Value: This project enables DLI to responsibly retire an obsolete enterprise system while improving data integrity, legal compliance, and operational efficiency—laying a strong foundation for a modern, secure, and sustainable information management environment.
