Our Hiring Process
Overview
- All MNIT job postings are announced in the State of Minnesota Careers Portal as positions become available.
- You can view and apply for our current openings:
- External Applications
- Accessible Applicant Portal
- Current State of Minnesota Employees should apply in Self Service
- After the job posting closes, resumes, cover letters, applications, and screening questions are reviewed by human resources to determine who meets the minimum qualifications required for the position.
- Applicants who meet the required minimum qualification are forwarded to the hiring manager for review and may be contacted to complete further assessments and/or invited to interview.
- If you do not meet the required minimum qualifications, you will receive an email indicating that you are no longer being considered for the position. You may appeal this determination by following the instructions in the email.
- If there are a large number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the pool of applicants may be narrowed down based on the preferred qualifications.
- After the interviews take place, the top candidate is selected. If you are selected, we will start the required background and reference checks. Human resources will have a conversation with you outlining the job offer details before sending you the offer letter.
- At any time in the selection process, you can check your application status.
- If you are no longer interested in a position for which you applied, you can select Withdraw on the My Job Applications page to be removed from consideration.
Prepare Your Resume
Resumes must be detailed to show how you meet the minimum qualifications for us to consider you. Here’s some tips to help you prepare you resume:
- A chronological resume format is best to ensure we see that you meet the minimum qualifications.
- Do not include a picture or any private data, such as social security number, date of birth, marital status, race or ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, religion, age, national origin, and public assistance status.
- Resumes we see average 2-4 pages as they must be detailed enough to show how you meet the minimum qualifications.
- List the months and years of your employment for each employer with the most relevant experience at the top. For part-time positions please list your average number of hours per week.
- Describe work responsibilities in detail, including systems, software, tools and/or equipment you have used. This helps articulate how you meet the minimum qualifications.
- Go through the minimum qualifications line by line and if you have that experience make sure it is clearly listed in your work responsibilities at your current or former positions.
- Go through the preferred qualifications line by line and if you have any of the requirements listed, make sure it is clearly listed in your work responsibilities at your current or former positions.
Understanding the Job Posting
This section explains our job postings to help you understand them and to show you what to look for.
- Job Titles
- There are two job titles for every role, a working title, and a job classification title.

- Bidders: A bid is a way for employees to express interest in a job that's in the same class and option as their current job to be considered before all applicants are considered.
- Claims: Employees in the same job classification facing layoff may request to claim a new position.
- Layoff Lists: If an employee has been laid off, they are considered for new vacancies.
- Workers Compensation: If an employee has been injured and cannot return to their current job, they may be reassigned to a new position.
- Connect 700 Program: Connect 700 allows eligible individuals with disabilities the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to perform a specific position for up to 700 hours on the job.
- Recently Separated Veterans/Veteran’s Preference: If Veterans qualify under these considerations they may be given special considerations.
- Competitive Candidate List: All candidates who have shown how they meet the minimum qualifications in their application/resume/cover letter who were not considered for one of the other conditions listed above.
