015, 020, and 050 Sections

In Tridion, there are 3 different places, called "Publications," where we build and publish content. Below is an introduction to each publication and what you'll use it for.

020 publication
050 publication
015 publication

020 publication

The 020 publication is where you'll build components and other content for your web pages. The bulk of your work will take place inside the orange Building Blocks > Website Content > [Your Agency's Name] folder and sub-folders:

In 020, you can:
- Create, edit, and delete components: all components should be maintained under 020 [Your Publication] Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > [Your Agency's Name]
- Create, edit, and delete categories and keywords: all categories and keywords should be maintained under 020 [Your Publication] Content > Categories and Keywords
- Create, edit, and delete CSS, LESS, and JS files (optional): only certain users are granted access to maintain these files. They can be found at 020 [Your Publication] Content > Building Blocks > System > Templates > Assets
050 publication

The 050 publication is where you build pages and publish content. The bulk of your work will take place in the pink 050 [Your Publication] Website > root folders and sub-folders:

In 050, you can:
- Create, edit, and delete page files: all pages should be maintained under 050 [Your Publication] Website > root
- Publish and unpublish pages: pages can be published under 050 [Your Publication] Website > root
- Publish and unpublish components: certain dynamic components can be published under 050 [Your Publication] Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > [Your Agency's Name]
- Publish and unpublish the Header, Footer, Head Tag, and Navigation: these can be published under 050 [Your Publication] Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > Site Layout
- Publish and unpublish the CSS: pages can be published under 050 [Your Publication] Website > root > css
- Publish and unpublish shared content: these can be published under 050 [Your Publication] Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > Cross Agency Shared Content (publishing from here will only update the content on your website)
There is more content you can publish under 050, but this summarizes the content that the average user will want to create or publish in the 050 section.

Common Points of Confusion

In the 050 publication, you will find a set of orange "Building Blocks" folders that are identical to the set in the 020 publication. This is because everything you do in the 020 Building Blocks folders is mirrored (aka inherited) in the 050 publication. If you create a component in 020, it will immediately appear in the 050. If you delete a component in 020, it will immediately disappear from 050.

This can be very confusing for users, especially new ones. It is very easy to get lost in the "wrong" set of folders, in the 050 publication. And this gets easily confusing, because you can't create or delete components in the 050 publication - the system will prevent it. We often get users asking us why they can't create a new component inside of a folder - and in almost every single case it is because they are in the 050 publication. If you are ever trying to create new content and find that your options for doing so have "disappeared," your first step should be to check what publication you are in and verify you're in the 020 publication.
015 publication

The 015 publication is where you place content that can be shared with other websites. For example, MMB can place the state budget in this section, and other websites can use the same file or component on their website. This means there is just one master budget document used on all state websites, and MMB has the ability to update and publish it to all state websites as needed. This eliminates the need for duplicate work, and prevents outdated information from circulating.

In the 015, you can:
- Create, edit, and delete components: all components should be maintained under 015 Shared Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > Cross Agency Shared Content > [Your Agency's Name]
- Create, edit, and delete categories and keywords: all categories and keywords should be maintained under 015 Shared Content > Categories and Keywords
- Publish and unpublish components: components can be published under 015 Shared Content > Building Blocks > Website Content > Cross Agency Shared Content > [Your Agency's Name]
When you publish from the 015 publication, be careful because it will publish out to all websites that use the shared component(s) being published. This may cause pages with work in progress to be unexpectedly published.
