Footer components

This page contains information on the default Footer components that come with all Tridion websites. There is also an option for an Open Footer component, if you need something more flexible than the default Footer.

Creating the Component

Footer components contain the following fields:
1. Name: enter a name for your component here. (This field does not display anywhere on your website, but is used to organize files within Tridion.)
2. Schema: select Footer
3. Link Column: (optional) if you opt to add link columns, there's a minimum requirement of 3 columns and up to a maximum of 6 columns. For each column you wish to create, you'll need to click the green plus icon (located under the "Link Column" title) and complete this set of fields:
  1. Text to display in the link: this is the column header, which also acts as a link. Enter the name of the header/link in this field, then generate the link using one of these fields:
    1. InternalLink: to link to a page within your website, click the browse folder icon . Then navigate to a component contained in the published page you wish to link to, and select it.
    2. ExternalLink: to link to page on an external website, paste the URL here.
  2. The child links within this column: this is where you'll enter the links that appear within the column. For each link you need to add, click the green plus icon (located under "the child links..." title).
    1. Text to display in the link: enter the name of the link in this field, then generate the link using one of these fields:
      1. InternalLink: to link to a page within your website, click the browse folder icon . Then navigate to a component contained in the published page you wish to link to, and select it.
      2. ExternalLink: to link to page on an external website, paste the URL here.
4. Enter the links to your social media sites: (optional) use the green plus sign icon to add a new row for each social media site you wish to link to.
5. Code block for e-mail subscriptions: (optional) enter the sign-up code here for email subscription services. (You will need to get this code from the vendor that provides these services to you, such as GovDelivery.)
6. Rich text block for the lower left area of your footer: (optional) if you have custom content that you'd like to appear in the lower left area of your footer, under the social media content, enter that here. This is a rich-text field that accepts images, lists, etc.
7. Rich text block for the lower center area of your footer: (optional) if you have custom content that you'd like to appear in the lower center area of your footer, enter that here. This is a rich-text field that accepts images, lists, etc.
8. Rich text block for the lower right area of your footer: (optional) if you have custom content that you'd like to appear in the lower right area of your footer, enter that here. This is a rich-text field that accepts images, lists, etc.
9. Select the linked mn.gov logo you'd prefer: Minnesota statutes require state websites to have information about registering to vote on them. We make this easy for you by including a Register to Vote link in the footer. Select one of the following from the drop-down (we recommend using one of the options that starts with "register-to-vote..." unless you already have register to vote information elsewhere on your website):
  1. none: if you have a heavily customized footer and have information about registering to vote elsewhere on your site, you can select this option to display nothing for this field.
  2. minnesota-blue: if you have a light colored footer, and have information about registering to vote elsewhere on your site, select this option. It will generate a branded blue Minnesota logo for your footer.
  3. minnesota-white: if you have a dark colored footer, and have information about registering to vote elsewhere on your site, select this option. It will generate a white Minnesota logo for your footer.
  4. register-to-vote-blue: if you have a light colored footer, select this option to generate a branded blue Minnesota logo and linked register to vote icon.
  5. register-to-vote-white: if you have a dark colored footer, select this option to generate a white Minnesota logo with linked register to vote icon.
10. Footer Code Block: (optional) if you have extra javascript, CSS, or other code to drop into a page, select the browse folder icon, navigate to the component, and select it.
When you've completed all the fields, Save and Close the component.
Rendering

The Footer is not inserted into a page, so it has no component template. Instead, footers are published directly and the system applies them to every page on your website. Below is an example of how the Footer component fields render on the website:
- This footer has four Link Columns (#3). Within these columns are the column header (Text to display in the link, #3.a), and the child links within this column (#3.b).
- The links to your social media sites (#4) are also present. This footer has links to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram accounts.
- The code block for email-subscriptions (#5) field has been used here to generate a sign-up box for email newsletters.
- The rich text block for the lower left area of your footer (#6) has been used to provide the address for this agency.
- The rich text block for the lower center area of your footer (#7) is not shown on this footer, but if it was the content would appear between items 6 & 8.
- The rich text block for the lower right area of your footer (#8) has been used to generate an Equal Opportunity hiring statement.
- The select the linked mn.gov you'd prefer (#9) field has been used to generate a white Minnesota logo with an accompanying link to Register to Vote, which goes to the Secretary of State website.
