Create This Page Sample PageLegislation components are dynamic components, which operate differently than most other Tridion components. Dynamic components, instead of being inserted into a page, are created and published separately. Since Legislation components are not inserted into a page, you set which page(s) the Legislation will appear on by associating each Legislation component with specific Legislation List components (for a more thorough explanation, see the Introduction on the "Create a Legislation Page"). Below is more information on Legislation components, how they render on Legislation List pages, and how to publish them.

The Basics of a Legislation Component

For each article you need to publish, you will have to create a separate article component. Below are the fields to complete, along with tips for completing them. To see where each of these fields render on the published page, please click the Component Template tab above.
1. Name: enter a name for your component. For legislation, we recommend naming your content in the following format: YYYY-MM-DD Title of Legislation. This will make it easier for you to locate, edit, and publish content by the date it was created.
2. Schema: select Legislation
3. Description: enter a very brief description of the legislation here.
4. Chapter: enter the chapter number here.
5. House File: enter the House file number here.
6. Senate File: enter the Senate file number here.
7. Date Presented: enter a date in this field by clicking the little calendar icon to the right of the field. A pop-up will appear, which allows you to navigate through a calendar and select a date (forward and back dating articles is allowed). The Time field is in 24 hour time, so for a time like 2:00 pm, you will need to enter 14:00:00.
8. Date Signed: enter a date in this field by clicking the little calendar icon to the right of the field. A pop-up will appear, which allows you to navigate through a calendar and select a date (forward and back dating articles is allowed). 9. Link to Signed Version, INTERNAL: if you want to link to a page within your website, click the browse folder icon , navigate to a component used in the published page that you want to link to, and select it.
10. Link to Signed Version, EXTERNAL: if you want to link to a page on another website, enter the URL for the page here.
11. Date Vetoed: enter a date in this field by clicking the little calendar icon to the right of the field. A pop-up will appear, which allows you to navigate through a calendar and select a date (forward and back dating articles is allowed). 12. Link to Vetoed Version, INTERNAL: if you want to link to a page within your website, click the browse folder icon , navigate to a component used in the published page that you want to link to, and select it.

15. Legislation List: this field is found under the Metadata tab of the component. Select a keyword from the drop-down. Ideally, your keyword should have already been created when the Legislation List component was created, but if for some reason the keyword you need doesn't exist yet, you can create one by clicking the green plus icon .
16. Dublin Core metadata fields: underneath the Legislation List field are a number of Dublin Core metadata fields. You do not need to complete these fields - they are not used anywhere on the website.
Component Templates

Since Legislation components are not inserted into pages, they don't have component templates. However, their content is still rendered on the page. Below are examples of how Legislation component content is rendered.

In this example, six Legislation components were published to the page. Each row represents a separate Legislation component. How the content displays should be pretty self-explanatory: information entered in the Chapter field will display in the Chapter column, information entered in the House File field will display in the House File column, etc.

The one thing to note is that if a link is entered in either fields 9 or 10, then the date entered in the "Date Signed" field will become that link. Same goes for links entered in fields 12 or 13 - the date entered in the "Date Vetoed" field will become that link.
Publishing Legislation

Unlike most other Tridion components, Legislation components are not inserted directly into a page. They are published individually instead, rather than as part of a page.

To publish an legislation component, navigate to 050 [Your Publication] Website > Building Blocks > Website Content > [Your Website] > [the sub-folder where your article components reside]

Then, right-click on one or all of the article components you wish to publish and select Publishing > Publish.

Follow the normal process for publishing content to the Staging and Live websites. Once the articles have successfully published, refresh the Legislation List pages where they should appear and verify that they are there.

Troubleshooting

If they do not appear on the page as expected, here are a few suggestions for troubleshooting:
- In the articles that were published: has the correct Legislation List keyword been selected, as instructed under "The Component" tab, step 15?
- Check that you are viewing the version of your website (Staging or Live) where the article was published.
- Check that the correct Legislation List component has been inserted in the page.
- Check that the correct keyword has been selected in the Legislation List component.
- Check the Legislation List page to make sure that the Legislation List page template has been applied.
