Amherst College (B.A., 1957, cum laude, American studies); University of Minnesota Law School (J.D., 1960, cum laude, Order of the Coif); Stringer, Donnelly & Sharood (1960-1969); Briggs & Morgan, partner and shareholder, manager, board of directors (1969-1980); The Pillsbury Company, senior vice president and general counsel (1980-82); executive vice president and general counsel (1982-83); executive vice president, general counsel and chief administrative officer (1983-1989); secretary (1983-87); U.S. Department of Education, general counsel (1989-1991); Office of the Governor, State Of Minnesota, deputy chief of staff (1992); chief of staff (1992-94); married Virginia L., four children, one stepson. Appointed September 1, 1994, elected 1996.
