The legislature returned from its break for Easter and Passover and continued working on budget bills. Both versions of the Veterans Omnibus Budget bill were heard in the House and the Senate.
On Monday, the House Ways and Means committee took up HF 2444 with Rep. Matt Bliss (Pennington) presenting the bill to the committee members. Some members took issue with the cuts to the homeless prevention measures that MDVA implements and reduced funding for the Veterans Homes. As well as the lack of inclusion for the accreditation requirement for those working on initial claims for Veterans. No amendments were considered.
The committee still approved the bill and later in the week sent it to the House floor. The full House of Representatives will take the bill up on Tuesday, April 29.
The Senate passed Sen. Aric Putnam’s SF 1959 on Wednesday with a unanimous vote after he amended the bill to take out the same accreditation requirement.
Once the House passes the budget bill on Tuesday, a conference committee will need to be established with an equal number of members from the House and Senate. It will be tasked with working out the difference between the two versions using joint budget targets that are currently being negotiated between leaders of both the House and Senate and the governor.
Work must be concluded by May 19, a date set by the Minnesota Constitution.
