Legislative Update - May 1, 2023

5/1/2023 8:15:00 AM

After passage of two versions of the Veterans and Military Affairs budget bill in the House and Senate the previous week, last week was relatively quiet. The exception to that was the naming of the conference committee that will work out the differences between the two versions.

Officially called the HF 1937 Conference Committee, it will be led by the House and Senate bill authors, Rep. Jerry Newton (Coon Rapids) and Sen. Nicole Mitchell (Woodbury), respectively. They will handle the negotiations to reconcile the two versions.

The other members from the House include Reps. Steve Elkins and Matt Bliss. Rep. Elkins is the Veterans and Military Affairs committee’s vice chair, he represents portions of Bloomington. Rep. Bliss is the Republican caucus lead on the committee and is from Pennington.

On the Senate side, the other two members are Sens. Erin Murphy and Bruce Anderson. Sen. Murphy chairs the State and Local Government and Veterans committee and represents the Highland Park area of St. Paul. Sen. Anderson is the Republican lead on that committee and is from Buffalo.

The conference committee will hold its first meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1 in Room 10 of the State Office Building.
