Legislative Update – February 27, 2023

2/27/2023 8:00:00 AM

Due to Presidents Day and a snowstorm causing the legislature to close from Wednesday through Friday, there was only one Veterans policy bill that moved last week.

HF45 was put up for a vote on the floor of the Minnesota House on Monday afternoon. The bill seeks to clarify language in the Veterans Restorative Justice Act (VRJA) to ensure that courts determine if a Veteran is eligible for deferred prosecution before a finding of guilt by the courts. Rep. Sandra Feist of New Brighton authored the bill and was the author of the VRJA when it passed two years ago. The House passed the bill with a vote of 128-0. The Senate companion hasn’t been heard in the Judiciary committee.

This week, MDVA’s recommended budget will be heard as a bill in the House Veterans and Military Affairs committee on Monday. The agency will also provide an overview of the budget to the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans committee on Tuesday.
