The Minnesota Legislature began its 2022 session on Monday, Jan. 31, the second year of the 92nd legislative session.
Traditionally, the second year of a legislative biennium is dedicated to crafting and passing a capital investment bill to pay for infrastructure needs around the state. It is sometimes referred to as a bonding bill because it uses bonds to borrow money to pay for the infrastructure.
There is also a significant budget surplus that could lead to the passage of a supplemental budget, but that is not required. A supplemental budget could include tax cuts, funding of new programs, using cash to pay for infrastructure needs and many other proposals.
No Veterans related bills were heard in committees, but many were introduced. Those bills are available to see on the /mdva/news/legislative-updates/state-bill-tracker/index.jspstate bill tracker.
On Wednesday, the House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee heard presentations from the Departments of Labor and Industry, Military Affairs and Veterans Affairs. MDVA provided an update on the suicide prevention office that was funded by the legislature last year.
Next week, the same committee will hear four Veterans related bills including House Files 2561, 1123, 3001 and 3036. This hearing will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 3:00 p.m. and is accessible on the MN House YouTube channel.
The Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee will hold its first hearing of 2022. MDVA will be on hand to provide an update.
