Legislative Update - March 12

3/12/2021 5:00:00 PM

This week, the Minnesota Legislature reached the first committee deadline, but only one Veterans related bill had movement. Another was given an informational hearing.

On Tuesday, the House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs committee approved HF1526 authored by Rep. Matt Bliss of Pennington. This bill expands the Veterans Suicide Awareness day by adding including the words ‘and Prevention’ to establish the first Saturday of every October as Veterans Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day. The bill was sent to the floor where it will await a vote by the entire House of Representatives.

The Senate Judiciary and Public Safety committee held a hearing for SF112 authored by Sen. Roger Chamberlain of Lino Lakes. This is the Veterans Restorative Justice Act. The House version of this bill (HF478) will be heard on Tuesday, March 16 in the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform committee.

Next week is the second committee deadline which will further filter out bills that have not received committee actions.
