Both Veterans committees in the House and the Senate advanced three bills this week during remote hearings. The pace should continue to move as the first deadline is four weeks away.

On Wednesday, the House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs committee heard three bills, two of which were MDVA sponsored bills. HF291 is authored by Rep. Heather Edelson of Edina. If passed, it would authorize MDVA to provide dental services to residents of the Veterans homes. The bill was approved and sent to the House floor. Chair Rob Ecklund of International Falls authored HF484. The bill would add MDVA to the list of agencies that could hire outside publicity representatives. The bill was passed and sent to the House floor. The last bill was HF381 from Rep. Mike Sundin of Esko. This would expand the definition of Veteran when it comes to obtaining state issued identification cards. The bill was approved and re-referred to Transportation.

The committee will meet again on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon next week. Wednesday’s agenda includes three Veterans bills, HFs 478, 585 and 592. These bills are on the state bill tracker.

The Senate Veterans and Military Affairs committee met on Thursday morning and heard three Veterans bills. Sen. Mike Goggin of Red Wing authored SF607. This would fund a grant for the Helmets to Hardhats construction career program. The bill was approved and re-referred to the Jobs and Economic Development committee. Sen. Jeff Howe of Rockville authored SF683 which would provide a tax credit to employers who hire disabled or unemployed Veterans. The bill was approved and re-referred to the committee on Taxes. Chair Andrew Lang of Olivia authored SF458. This bill would allow property owned by Veteran service organizations to use gross profits from lawful gambling on repairs, maintenance, and other improvements of the property. The committee approved the bill and sent it to State Government Finance and Elections.

The committee is expected to meet again next Thursday morning.

The Senate Civil Law and Data Practices committee will hear SF363 (Veterans stable housing initiative) on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
