The legislature moved the first Veterans related bill of the 2021 session. New Veterans bills continue to be introduced as the House and Senate get organized.
On Thursday, the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs committee heard SF 116 authored by Sen. Roger Chamberlain. This bill is the Veterans Restorative Justice Act which establishes guidance to the courts for sentencing Veterans for criminal offenses related to service-connected disorders. The bill was approved by the committee and re-referred to the Senate Judiciary committee.
The committee also heard presentations from Minnesota chapters of the American Legion and VFW.
Next Thursday, the committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. and hear Senate Files 91, 92 and 93. It will also receive a presentation about the Veterans and Military Affairs budgets from committee staff.
The House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs committee met on Tuesday and Wednesday this past week. On Tuesday it received overviews from MDVA and the Department of Military Affairs. On Wednesday it heard presentations from the American Legion, Commanders’ Task Force, Jewish War Veterans, DAV of Minnesota, Veterans Defense Project and the United Veterans Legislative Council.
The committee will meet twice next week, but both agendas do not include Veterans related items.
