This was the first full week of the 2018 legislative session. With that, both Veterans committees in the House and the Senate held its first meetings.
The House Veterans Affairs Division met and heard two Veterans related bills. The first one, HF 2907 is authored by Rep. Jeff Howe. It seeks to permit data sharing between county officials to administer the disabled Veteran's homestead exclusion. It was approved and re-referred to the Civil Law and Data Practices committee. HF 2908 is authored by Rep. Wills. This bill would designate a bridge on US Highway 52 in Rosemount as Warrant Officer Dennis A. Groth Memorial Bridge. It was approved and re-referred to the Transportation Policy committee.
The Senate Veterans and Military Affairs committee met and did not hear any Veterans related bills. It did listen to presentations regarding Minnesota Veterans Courts, the Veterans Defense Project and Eagle's Healing Nest.
There are three scheduled meetings in the House and Senate Veterans committees. On Monday, the House Veterans Affairs Division will hear a presentation about bonding requests from MDVA. It will also hear HF 1123 which would increase the Homestead valuation exclusion for disabled Veterans. Later that afternoon there will be a joint meeting of the Veterans committees to learn about the process to acquire a new state Veterans home. The Senate Veterans committee will meet on Thursday, but no agenda has been posted.
