Over the past decade, electric golf carts have enjoyed increased popularity in the United States. And they’re no longer limited to caddying around players on golf courses.
In fact, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and the Bemidji Veterans Home were honored last month to accept the generous donation of an electric golf cart from Ride for the Troops (RFTT). The nonprofit presented this gift to Kevin Gish, Administrator, Minnesota Veterans Home - Bemidji, to help future Residents with mobility issues be safely transported across large distances to successfully participate in recreational programming.
According to Gish, this cart will be an important addition to the Home, which is scheduled to open later this year. “Events that include walking can be a challenge for some of our Veterans, but this motorized cart will ensure that Residents have the chance to more easily share in social experiences away from our campus. What better way to create a sense of camaraderie with each other and connect to community events?”
Val Ahrens, RFTT Treasurer, noted that the organization is best known for its annual motorcycle ride each June featuring nearly 300 route participants and a dinner, raffle and silent auction; proceeds benefit Northland Veterans and their families. The organization was initially founded 17 years ago to financially support loved ones of deployed Red Bull National Guard members during times of need. Today, RFTT supports Veteran causes ranging from Veterans on the Lake (a recreational facility for disabled Veterans to enjoy vacations) to adult day services and individual crisis grants.
RFTT secured the Home’s golf cart from Bemidji-based King of the Road Trailers, then the In Country Motorcycle Club – comprised of Vietnam Veterans – funded wrapping the cart’s roof with the official name “Minnesota Veterans Home - Bemidji, MN.”
John Reuter, Vice President of both RFTT and the In Country Motorcycle Club said, “It’s an honor to serve those who have served our nation. We’re proud to do whatever we can do to improve our Veterans’ sense of independence or just plain add to their enjoyment of life.”
This donation also aligns with MDVA’s sustainability commitment. Electric golf carts are quiet and don’t pollute, which reduces their environmental impact.
MDVA Interim Commissioner Brad Lindsay expressed gratitude for a donation that will help enhance the Bemidji Veterans Home experience. “Gifts like this allow us to deliver a wide range of special programs that all Residents can enjoy. We very much appreciate this support from RFTT.”
Minnesota Veterans Homes rely upon the ongoing encouragement and assistance we receive through donations like this one. Online contributions are welcome at MinnesotaVeteran.org/Donate.
