Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota (DAV) was awarded a $60,000 SOT grant to support their “Transportation Program.” DAV’s Transportation Program is a rapidly expanding, volunteer-driver initiative designed to provide Minnesota Veterans with transportation to their medical appointments at no cost to the Veteran. The program currently serves Veterans residing in the Twin Cities Metro, Central, Northeast, Northwest and Southeast areas of Minnesota with the recent addition of Mankato to the communities DAV’s Transportation Program serves.
Last year, DAV’s Transportation Program logged:
Veteran testimonials
"The ride was awesome! The gentleman was so courteous and polite, and the ride went well." Nancy (First time rider, Blue Earth County), Southeast DAV Transportation Program
"The DAV program has impacted me greatly. As a Veteran that doesn’t drive, it has been great. It helps me to get to my appointments both locally and down in the Twin Cities. It helps me because taking a bus is hard with scheduling and road construction, it’s a lot of stress. The volunteer drivers are great, they are kind, punctual and very helpful." Fred, Marine Veteran, Northeast DAV Transportation Program
"The DAV Transportation services have been fantastic! I live 30 miles away from my healthcare. DAV Transportation is my only way to get to my appointments besides for a taxi and I couldn’t afford that on my limited income." Pat, Central Minnesota Transportation Program
“The DAV Transportation program is a lifesaver for me since I do not drive anymore. I live alone and would have trouble arranging a ride back and forth for appointments. The drivers are very nice and know what they are doing.” Howard, Metro Transportation Program
The SOT competitive grant program is currently “on-hold” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MDVA tentatively plans to renew the program this fall 2021.
